The Pros of Probiotics

As you may know, probiotics are found in a variety of food items, such as yogurt products. But what do probiotics actually do for your health?

Since probiotics is still a new products in the market, there are still studies being done to find out more about what it can do for the human body.  Currently, studies have found that:

  • probiotics may improve nutrient bioavailability, for B vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, magnesium, and phosphorus, among others.
  • certain strains (such as Lactobacillus GG) may aid in significantly decreasing the rate of acute diarrhea and rotavirus shedding. Parents also reported a 25% decrease in diaper rash among babaies drinking formula containing probiotics.
  • probiotics and active bacteria culture may improve lactose intolerance. The bacterial streain commonly used in yogurt can produce lactase enzymes. So people with lactose intolerance and children suffering from intestinal infection can usually tolerate yogurt with an active culture.
  • by regulating intestinal transit time, probiotics improve constipation among the elderly.
  • probiotics, especially acidophilus, promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the colon and reduce the conversion of bile into carcinogens (cancer-causing substances).
  • probiotics may enhance immunity by regulating lymphocytes and antibodies.

How do we make our probiotics?

We use a process called inhibition, in which we culture a microorganism so that we inhibit the growth of the mother cell in the culturing process. While this is happening, we remove these inhibitor continuously so that it's possible for the microorganism to cultivate continuously and to achieve high cell counts.

First, we put the fermented broth (A) in the membrane (see diagram below).

Then the pure lactic acid bacteria (B) and organic acid/nutrient (C) are produced. The pure lactic acid bacteria is the purest form of probiotics. The organic acid/nutrient is the waste product.

What are Probiotics?

According to the currently adopted definition by WHO (World Health Organization), probiotics are "life microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host."

At the start of the 20th century, probiotics were thought to beneficially affect the host by improving its intestinal microbial balance, thus inhibiting pathogens and toxin producing bacteria. Today, specific health effects are being investigated and documented including alleviation of chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases prevention and treatment of pathogen-induced diarrhea, urogenital infections, and atopic diseases (i.e., asthma).
